This powerful manipulative tool helps students understand geometric principles as they experiment with tessellations. Students choose a basic shape, then explore what happens when they apply geometric transformations-slides, turns, flips, and glides-to create a tessellation. They can then watch as their creation animates on the screen, reinforcing transformational geometry concepts. The program also includes step-by-step activities that help students create tessellations of increasing complexity.

Secondary titles

building perspective picture: Building Perspective
Sunburst
Win/Mac
4-12
Develop spatial perception and visual reasoning skills with this award-winning program that will sharpen your students’ problem-solving abilities. Students compare and contrast four side views of buildings to construct a top view of 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5 city blocks with buildings of different heights. Students encounter visual puzzles that they solve by extrapolating information from four side views and construct a hypothesis of the top view. They become logical and systematic thinkers when they deal with the advanced problems on the program that may have incomplete or seemingly conflicting information. On-screen help can be easily accessed providing students with guidance as they need it. A Teacher’s Guide provides appropriate pre-teaching materials and extension activities. Building Perspective promotes higher order thinking skills. Your students establish deductive reasoning, visual memory, spatial perception and sequencing skills as they solve visual problems of increasing difficulty. They develop the rational "eye" needed for high performance in art, design, geometry and trigonometry. Three levels of play make this game a fun challenge.

equation tile teaser picture: Equation Tile Teaser
Sunburst
Win/Mac
6-9
Students develop logical thinking and pre-algebra skills with three challenging problem-solving activities. Presented with a set of number equations with 10 missing spots, students select numbers 0 through 9 exactly once to correctly satisfy the equation set. While it is easy to choose one number to make one sentence true, it becomes more difficult to create a correct numerical arrangement using all 10 digits. An on-screen calculator and a Hint button are available for assistance. Students progress from activities that develop skills in:
* Basic computation
* Mixed operations
* Solving early algebra problems
* Logical thinking
* Deductive reasoning

Students begin the program solving randomly generated problem sets involving mixed operations. They are given three horizontally oriented equations to solve. Some of these are balance equations with an operation in the solution! In the second activity, students solve intersecting equations in a mathematical crossword puzzle. With 10 spots to fill, students maneuver within a 7x7 grid that contains 4 horizontal and 4 vertical equations. In the third activity students develop pre-algebra skills as they solve sets of equations containing two variables. Students must assign a single digit value to the variables and solve the set of equations based on their selection of these two variables.

geometers sketchpad picture: Geometer's Sketchpad
Key Curriculum Press
Win/Mac
5-12
With a scope that spans the mathematics curriculum from middle school to college, The Geometer's Sketchpad brings a powerful dimension to the study of mathematics. Sketchpad™ is a dynamic construction and exploration tool that enables students to explore and understand mathematics in ways that are simply not possible with traditional tools—or with other mathematics software programs. With Sketchpad, students can construct an object and then explore its mathematical properties by dragging the object with the mouse. All mathematical relationships are preserved, allowing students to examine an entire set of similar cases in a matter of seconds, leading them by natural course to generalizations. Sketchpad encourages a process of discovery in which students first visualize and analyze a problem, and then make conjectures before attempting a proof. Also available in Spanish.

green globs picture: Green Globs and Graphing Equations
Sunburst
Win/Mac

Here they examine lines, circles, ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas and other graphs, visually experiencing the effect on a graph’s shape and position as they alter the equation that supports it. Students continue their learning with a series of fun, competitive games that build problem-solving strategies as they write equations to uncover hidden graphs and "explode" points on a co-ordinate grid. This math program creates an solid conceptual foundation in algebra, trigonometry and graphing concepts in your students. Math teachers praise this program because it encourages students to think creatively about graphing equations.
