The DoTS Educational Technology Team, in conjunction with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction has completed an in-depth software review process. A wide range of productivity tools and language arts software titles were identified for review. These titles included current bestsellers, titles requested by teachers, and favorites of the review committee. Each title was reviewed for curricular content, standards, instructional format and design, age appropriateness, and ease of use. The following titles successfully met the established criteria and are being recommended as valuable instructional support tools.

The list has been divided into several sections. The first section contains General Productivity Tools. These tools are appropriate for various ages and are not subject specific. As such, we encourage the use of these titles across the curriculum. The second section concentrates on Language Arts with Reading and Writing contained in their own sub-sections. The third section addresses purchasing information. It is anticipated that other subject areas will be added in the near future.

Information specific to each title has been provided in the following order:

General Productivity Tools

The following General Productivity titles are tools that can be used across the curriculum for any number of activities. Both AppleWorks and Microsoft Office include a set of tools for word-processing, presentation design and display, and spreadsheet creation. AppleWorks comes pre-loaded on iMacs and is also available for purchase. DPS has a district license for Microsoft Office allowing it to be installed on district computers. Every teacher in the district may also use a single copy of Microsoft Office for home use.

Kid Pix Studio Deluxe is a visual presentation tool that can also be used across the curriculum. This program is most appropriate for younger students (K-3) and allows the user to draw, paint, animate and create. Color graphics can be printed or used to produce slide shows.

HyperStudio is another visual presentation tool for use across the curriculum. Students in grades 3-5 will find a multitude of creative ways to put this program to use. This is an excellent program for creating graphic presentations.
