Vital Technology Skills ECE-5


The Denver Public Schools Elementary School Technology Committee has created a list of vital technology skills that are to be taught to students in DPS elementary schools. The list was created to ensure that elementary school students achieve the technology standards set forth in the DPS Standards for Success.

Vital Technology Skills ECE-5

Ethics/Conduct:

Pre-Primary (Grades ECE,K)

  • Demonstrate responsible behavior while using technology
  • Use technology in a careful and respectful manner.
  • Leave hardware and software ready for others to use
  • Use programs as directed features

Primary -Grades 1, 2

  • Demonstrate responsible behavior while using technology
  • Use technology in a careful and respectful manner.
  • Leave hardware and software ready for others to use
  • Use programs as directed

Intermediate- Grades 3-5

  • Demonstrate responsible behavior while using technology
  • Use technology in a careful and respectful manner
  • Leave hardware and software ready for others to use
  • Use programs/Internet sites/email as instructed
  • Understand and abide by Computer/Network Use Agreement
  • Respect privacy of others (e-mail, personal files, passwords)
  • Identify types and uses of technology in the school district, community, and world
  • Demonstrate the practice of social and ethical use of electronic information
  • Participate in teacher directed exploration of Internet safety procedures

Applications:

Pre-Primary (Grades ECE,K)

Operating System-

  • Recognize icons, and be able to open documents and programs
  • Demonstrate proper handling and placement of CD-ROM and floppy diskette into appropriate drive of the computer system

Keyboarding-

  • Participate in teacher directed exploration of keyboard layout and keyboard concepts

Word Processing-

  • Execute and utilize text within an appropriate program for an age-appropriate activity

Graphics-

  • Use age-appropriate graphics software for a simple activity

Primary -Grades 1, 2

Operating System-

  • Recognize icons, and be able to click on them to execute program
  • Demonstrate proper handling and placement of CD-ROM and floppy diskette into appropriate drive of the computer system
  • Identify and use computer storage devices using appropriate terminology

Keyboarding-

  • Participate in teacher directed exploration of keyboard layout and keyboard concepts
  • Demonstrate understanding of keyboard layout.

Word Processing-

  • Execute and utilize a word processing program for an age-appropriate activity
  • Create, Edit, and print a simple document

Graphics-

  • Use age-appropriate graphics software to complete activity.
  • Produce an age-appropriate project using graphics or desktop publishing software

Multimedia-

  • Produce an age-appropriate project using a multimedia program (ClarisWorks, Hyperstudio, Kid Pix) which may include the following: text, graphics, sound, video, or simple animation

Intermediate- Grades 3-5

Operating System-

  • Directly manage files and folders to save and retrieve documents
  • Participate in teacher directed navigation of hard drive to: save and retrieve documents, save to a disk, assigned folder, or networking server

Keyboarding-

  • Improve touch keyboarding speed and accuracy skills on home-row, numeric and alphabetical keys

Word Processing-

  • Use formatting procedures in word processing such as font type, font size, bold, italics, etc.
  • Use word processing features such as spell check, thesaurus, and copy/paste features

Graphics-

  • Combine graphics into a word processing document
  • Produce an age-appropriate project using a presentation program, a desktop publishing program, or a graphics program

Database-

  • Use an existing database to retrieve information
  • Create and manipulate a simple database

Spreadsheet-

  • Create and manipulate a simple spreadsheet

Multimedia-

  • Produce an age-appropriate project using a multimedia program (ClarisWorks, Hyperstudio, Kid Pix) which may include the following: text, graphics, sound, video, or simple animation
  • Produce an age-appropriate project using multimedia equipment as available(CD-ROMs, digital camera, scanner, or laserdiscs)

Components/Problem Solving:

Pre-Primary (Grades ECE,K)

  • Use appropriate terminology to describe parts of computer and other technologies, (calculators, printers, scanners, VCRs)
  • Use appropriate terminology to describe parts of computer(mouse, keyboard, monitor)

Care/Operations-

  • Demonstrate the proper care and safe use of equipment
  • Demonstrate use of keyboard and mouse functions
  • Demonstrate proper startup and closing procedures for a software package
  • Identify potential abuses to and proper care of hardware

Primary -Grades 1, 2

  • Know difference in terms of hardware and software

Care/Operations-

  • Demonstrate proper care and safe use of equipment
  • Demonstrate use of computer peripherals (printer, scanner, video in/out)
  • Demonstrate use of data storage practices (saving to floppy disk, zip disk, or network)

Problem Solving-

  • Determine suitable software for projects
  • Determine computer and/or software suitability between platforms (Mac/ Windows)

Networking-

  • Identify/Understand network and network cables

Research:

Pre-Primary (Grades ECE,K)

  • Participate in teacher directed exploration of primary reference programs (My First Picture Dictionary)

Primary -Grades 1, 2

  • Use CD-ROM or Internet based primary reference sources
  • Use a teacher-chosen Internet site to locate information
  • Demonstrate use of online catalog system

Intermediate- Grades 3-5

  • Use of electronic primary reference sources
  • Use general electronic reference sources-dictionaries, encyclopedias, local and wide area networks to access information from electronic databases
  • Demonstrate use of online catalog system
  • Use Internet addresses to access and bookmark appropriate internet sites
  • Use search engines on internet for classroom topics
  • Properly cite Internet resources (bibliography, footnotes, etc...)
  • Import Internet resources(graphics, sound, or video) to produce a research project.
