Vital Skills List for Administrators


The Denver Public Schools Administrator Technology Committee has created a list of vital technology skills for DPS Administrators. The list was created to ensure that administrators achieve the technology standards necessary to provide their teachers with the necessary technology skills to in turn provide their students with technology skills set forth in the DPS Standards for Success.

Word Processing/ Introductory Desktop Publishing

Target Skills

  • Create documents to support learning activities
  • Use advanced features of word processing and desktop publishing to develop professional products

Achieving Skills

  • Add columns to a document
  • Insert tables into a document
  • Use style sheets and templates
  • Download and read PDF files (Adobe Acrobat)

Progressing Skills

  • Set margins, line spacing, tabs, etc.
  • Insert date, time, page number
  • Do mail merges
  • Use style sheets and templates
  • Import/insert data from other applications
  • Use technology for basic procuctivity tasks

Foundation Skills

  • Enter and edit text
  • Cut, copy, and paste text
  • Change font, size, style
  • Check spelling

  • Create layouts for on-screen use and printing reports
  • Design and manipulate databses and generate customized reports

Progressing Skills

  • Mail Merge
  • Create a basic database with multiple fields and records
  • Find, modify, and sort database by specific fields

Foundation Skills

  • Interpret and communicate information in an existing database
  • Add and delete records in an existing database

  • Effectively access and use Local Area and Wide Area networks

  • Understand difference between Local Area and Wide Area networks
  • Knowledge Areas:
    • Advanced knowledge of accessing on-line resources

Foundation Skills

  • Find and use appropriate printer on network
  • Access a file server (connect/log on, retrieve a program or document, save a document to a specified location)
  • Connect and disconnect from network using user ID and password
  • Appropriate use of network resources and printer
  • Knowledge Areas:
    • Terms such as local area network, wide area network, access rights, security passwords, file server, zone

Telecommunications

Target Skills

  • Collaborate with peers through available tools (e.g., email, on-line conferences, web sites, threaded and other on-line discussions, on-line projects, and telecollaboratives)
  • Configure and use specialized e-mail external mail lists relevant to professional information needs

Achieving Skills

  • Configure and use specialized email lists within the district
  • Use of Internet and online resources as supplementary educational tools
  • Effectively use Internet/Intranet

Progressing Skills

  • Use a web browser to access and use resources on DPS Net, the Internet and World Wide Web
  • Telnet to a remote computer on the Internet
  • Connect to, and use resources from DPS Library Resources and DPS Web Site
  • Use electronic mail (compose, send, retrieve, read, reply to sender, reply to all, and forward)
  • Attach files to email messages
  • Retrieve and use attachments (e.g., view, read, save, and print)
  • Create and use group addresses for electronic mail
  • Understand difference between Internet/Intranet

Foundation Skills

  • Awareness of online resources available for teacher and student use
  • Know how to create outgoing messages and retrieve messages using the DPS telephone voicemail system
