Technical Architecture Review Committee

From Board Policy EGAEC

In order to maintain the integrity of network services, DoTS has implemented a Technical Architecture Review Committee (TARC). The TARC reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and is made up of technical and non-technical district staff, appointed by the CTO. It is the intent of this policy to provide a standardized and controllable network environment in support of the mission of the Denver Public Schools.
The TARC is charged with reviewing, approving, and setting standards for all hardware and software for use on the DPSNet. All plans and projects that have a technology component that utilizes the DPSNet must comply with published standards developed by TARC. Any use of DPSNet that is not included in the published standards requires review from the TARC for recommendation of approval by DoTS. Implementation of a project or plan could be delayed or cancelled if enough time is not allowed for TARC to review the technology components. It is the responsibility of the individuals proposing the plan or project to prepare and present technical materials for review by TARC.

Goal of the TARC

  • To assist district schools and departments in determining appropriate technology solutions.
  • To coordinate the co-existence of DPS technology solutions.
  • To maintain consistency with DPS standards and the technology standards of the district's Technology Implementation Plan (TIP).

Why Was the TARC Created?

  • To guarantee new technology choices will successfully co-exist with other DPS network and software solutions.
  • To make certain all business and educational technology needs are aligned with district goals.
  • To maintain the district's flexibility to adopt emerging technologies.

When Do You Use the TARC?

  • When you want to use technology not published as a DPS standard.
  • When the technology design phase of a project is completed.
  • When you have a question or want advice about using technology in your school or department.

How Do You Use the TARC?

  • Call the Hotline (720-423-3888) and have your call assigned to the TARC group.

  • Information you may need to provide to the TARC is:
    • Statement of business or instructional need
    • Technical details/architecture
    • Plans for staff development, testing, support, rollout, and resources
    • Cost
  • TARC will make a recommendation to Chief Technology Officer for final approval.

How Will Technology be Evaluated?

  • Impact on network and support
  • Vendor economic strength, support and expertise
  • Product/technology maturity
  • Interoperability
  • Use of industry recommended design standards
